Criterion 1, Quality Standards and Records, of Appendix A, General Design Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants, to 10 CFR Part 50, Domestic Licensing of Production and Utilization Facilities, requires, in part, that components important to safety be designed, fabricated, erected, and tested to quality standards commensurate with the importance of the safety functions to be performed. Section III, Design Control, of Appendix B, Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Fuel Reprocessing Plants, to 10 CFR Part 50 requires, in part, that measures be established to ensure that regulatory requirements and the design basis for applicable structures, systems, and components are correctly translated into specifications, drawings, procedures, and instructions. This guide delineates a procedure acceptable to the NRC staff. This guide endorses with some exceptions ANSI N278.1-1975 (ASME).
