Desierto de los Liones: A forest in crisis

Journal Article · · American Forests; (USA)
OSTI ID:7153151
This article examines the death of sacred firs in El Desierto de los Liones above Mexico City. Dead and dying trees occur over much of the Park and it is estimated that damage has increased 30 percent since the first color infrared aerial photographs were made in March, 1985. Damage has been attributed to elevated ozone levels and photochemical smog from Mexico City and also from beetle infestation. Attempts to rehabilitate the forest include salvage logging of infested trees, erosion prevention, and reforestation with species more resistant to ozone. Finally, a research program is underway with scientists from Mexico and the United States working to determine the relative susceptibility of the trees indigenous to the Park to ozone and other air pollutants and to gain a better understanding of the role bark beetles play in the damage complex.
