An investigation of the optical properties of Y/sub 3-2x/Ca/sub 2x/Fe/sub 5-x/V/sub x/O/sub 12/ single crystals (0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.4) at T = 80 and 290/sup 0/K showed that their transmission window practically coincides with the transmission window of YIG. An examination of the absorption spectra of a suspension of YCVG for the stated x values in the 800 to 400 cm/sup -1/ spectral region showed that as x increases the frequency of the characteristic absorption lines does not change; however, the absorption lines are broadened and difficult to resolve. The contribution to the Faraday effect from the tetrahedral sublattice in pure YIG is greater at a wavelength lambda = 0.63 ..mu..m than at lambda = 1.15 ..mu..m, and this contribution increases as the temperature falls. The specific Faraday rotation in YCVG is greater than the Faraday rotation in YIG. This indicates a preferential replacement of the iron ions in the tetrahedral coordinations. The temperature dependence of the Faraday effect in YCVG at the wavelength lambda = 0.63 ..mu..m and lambda = 1.15 ..mu..m is less than for YIG.
