The electron density along a narrow east--west strip 10'' north of R Mon in NGC 2261 was determined from measurements of the intensity ratio for the components of the lambda lambda 3729, 3726 (O II) doublet. The n/sub e/ variation from place to place exceeds an order of magnitude.
