The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's), Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste Management is responsible for the management of radioactive, hazardous, and mixed wastes resulting from the U.S. nuclear weapons program. Activities include treatment, storage, and disposal of currently generated waste; remediation of sites; and decontamination and decommissioning of facilities contaminated as a result of the U.S. nuclear weapons program. For more than 40 yr, the waste generated by the nuclear weapons program has been managed to then-current standards. Some of these waste management practices, however, have subsequently been proven to be inadequate for long-term environmental protection. The Office of Environmental Restoration is responsible for environmental remediation activities at 110 sites in 32 states and one site in Puerto Rico. These responsibilities include assessing the contamination, evaluating the hazards associated with it, determining the probability of migration and the risks of such migration, and selecting and implementing remedial actions.
