This patent describes a mode-matched diode-pumped solid state laser. It comprises: a block of laser material having a pair of opposed sides, cavity forming means positioned around the block to define a laser cavity having a tightly folded zig-zag resonator portion within the block between the opposed sides having vertices at a preselected fold angle, laser diode pumping sources separated from the block of laser material, and a lens for focusing radiation from the laser diode pumping sources onto at least one of the opposed sides of the block of laser material so as to substantially align the radiation from the laser diode pumping sources with the vertices of the zig-zag portion of the resonator.
