Alaska summary report, June 1984-December 1985

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7148818
The Alaska Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Region is diverse in its physiography and geology. Many sedimentary basins with petroleum potential occur in the submerged Federal lands of Alaskan offshore areas. Current estimates of undiscovered economically recoverable resources for leased and unleased lands in the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Region are 3.33 billion barrels of oil and 6.90 trillion cubic feet of gas. However, only a small percentage of the region has been explored to date. The present world oil surplus, in conjunction with high operating costs on the remote Alaskan offshore environment, necessitate that the reserves be considerably larger than in other regions for fields to be economically producible. In addition, technological and logistical constraints imposed by the severe Alaskan environment present difficulties for exploration, development, and transportation of these resources. The OCS oil and gas activities in Alaska and their onshore impacts are discussed.
