Disposal of slightly contaminated radioactive wastes from nuclear power plants
- Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC (United States)
Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations provides six alternatives for disposal of slightly contaminated radioactive materials from nuclear power plants. The options ultimately lead either to disposal in a part 61-licensed low level waste site, or obtaining Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval for disposal in a manner not otherwise authorized, pursuant to part 20.302 and NRC Information Notice 83-05. Over the past 10 years, the NRC has approved 23 requests for either onsite or offsite disposal of slightly contaminated materials originating from nuclear power plants in non-agreement states. This paper provides a description of the waste and storage methods, the regulatory review process, and radiation dose guidelines. The information should be useful to other commercial nuclear plants investigating this storage alternative.
