A special type of storage ring, in which beams of longitudinally polarized particles can be obtained. To maintain the longitudinal polarization of the particles, it is necessary that the angle of rotation of the spin vector, due to the anomalous magnetic moment, be zero over the period of revolution of the particle in the ring. This requirement is satisfied in a storage ring with a figure eight orbit. If a helical magnetic field perpendicular to the particle orbit is produced in the straight section of such a storage ring the particles will become polarized in the longitudinal direction. (GHT)
