A new member of the intergrowth family (ACuO{sub 3-x}){sub m}(A{prime}O){sub n} has been isolated. YbBaYSrCu{sub 3}O{sub 8} represents the member (m = 3; n = 1). Its structure is formed by stacking (A{prime}O){infinity} single rock-salt-type layers (A{prime} = Pb, Ba) and triple oxygen-deficient perovskite layers (A{sub 3}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}){infinity} (A = Ba, Pb, Sr, Y). Each perovskite layer for different m = 3 members is formed of two pyramidal (CuO{sub 2.5}){infinity} layers and one (CuO){infinity} layer of corner-sharing CuO{sub 4} square planar group interleaved with Y and Sr ions. The as-synthesized compound is not a superconductor, but evidence of superconductivity at 50 K (less than 1%) is observed by introduction of calcium. A preliminary electron microscopy investigation of this phase shows that it exhibits a modulated structure. 13 refs., 5 figs.
