The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of middle/junior high public school teachers concerning the quality and effectiveness of the free and inexpensive industry designed instructional materials related to energy education. The sample population was comprised of 196 middle/junior high school teachers in Massachusetts. The teachers responded to two questionnaires related to their use of free and inexpensive materials provided by the EEI, their perceptions of the EEI materials, and other sources of free and inexpensive energy materials. The data were analyzed using invariate statistical methods; correlation coefficients; unpaired, two-tailed t tests on the means; crossbreak tables; and chi squares. Textbooks currently being used by the sample were analyzed with respect to energy content. The analysis of the data showed only two texts devote percentages of their content to energy education commensurate with the time teachers devote to energy education. Thus, up-to-date supplementary materials are needed.
