The extragalactic distance scale; Proceedings of the ASP 100th Anniversary Symposium, Victoria, Canada, June 29-July 1, 1988

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7143505
Problems in the determination of the extragalactic distance scale are discussed in reviews and reports of recent observational and theoretical investigations. Sections are devoted to the Local Group galaxies, distance-scale calibrators, galaxies beyond the Local Group, the Virgo Cluster, and deviations from the Hubble flow. Particular attention is given to Hubble's distance indicators, Cepheid distances to nearby galaxies, CCD photometry of Magellanic Cloud RR Lyr variables, novae and giant H II regions as distance indicators, Cepheids in galaxies of the Sculptor group, the NGC 1399 globular-cluster system, calibration of the CCD Tully-Fisher relation, and the effect of the local velocity anomaly on the Hubble constant.
