Variable moment of inertia (VMI) model and theories of nuclear collective motion

The phenomenological variable moment of inertia model (VMI) and its relation to transition quadrupole moments are examined. A comprehensive survey is given of theoretical approaches to the VMI model, including both low spin and backbending regions. (SDF)
