Wireline logging for coal exploration in Australia

Slim wireline logging tools are run in all coal exploration holes drilled for Shell in Australia. Wireline logs not only provide valuable information on seam continuity, inter-seam lithologies and overburden type, but also enable accurate seam thickness determination and depth correction of cores. Recently, petrophysical methods developed in the oil industry were introduced to establish quantitative relationships between wireline log readings and various coal properties, in particular, raw ash content. The vast number of logs generated in a coal drilling program and the need for their quick evaluation led to the adoption of Shell's existing data management system for hydrocarbon logs. Logs are digitized and, together with the mathematically derived formulae relating specific coal properties to log response, are entered into a computer program package. Currently this package can produce ash content and bulk density values per depth interval, and average values per seam both in printed and graphical form. Results are illustrated with examples from the Degulla field (ATP 137C) in the Galilee Basin, Queensland. New tools are being developed to increase the number of coal properties which can be derived from wireline logs. Once coal petrophysics becomes a mature science it is expected to produce substantial savings both in coring and core analysis costs and in the length of field drilling operations. Computer processing of log and core data will accelerate prospect evaluation and mine planning.
