United Technologies Corp., Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division will perform 83Vertical Bar3< of the engine work, Motoren- and Turbinen Union Muenchen G.m.b.H. about 13Vertical Bar3<, and Fiat S.p.A. 4Vertical Bar3<, in developing JT10D engines for a second generation of medium-sized, fuel-efficient medium-sized aircraft for the early 1980's. The increased bypass ratio and other engine technology should offer airlines up to 25Vertical Bar3< reductions in fuel consumption per pound of thrust compared with first-generation turbofans and 10Vertical Bar3< reductions compared with high-bypass turbofan engines started in the 1960's. Engine certification for the first engine, JT10D-132, sized at 32,000 lb of takeoff thrust, is scheduled for Dec. 1981. This engine is specifically aimed at the medium-range Boeing trijets now being designed for domestic and international routes.
