The photometry and kinematics of Am stars and ultrashort-period cepheids (USPC) are discussed for stars in the Bright Star Catalogue (HR). Some inconsistencies in the application of spectroscopic criteria for Am stars are discussed, together with the possibility that some of the apparent mutual exclusiveness of Am and USPC characteristics may arise from these inconsistencies. The photometric criterion, delta(v-b) less than 0 (or delta(m/sub 1/) less than 0) isolates most of the stars recognized as Am from spectra of classification dispersion but there may be exceptions that are not understood. With the exception of a few blue stragglers from the old-disk population, the bright Am and USPC stars have a maximum age near that of the Hyades.
