L-subshell ionization cross sections for uranium by proton and alpha-particle bombardment

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., A; (United States)
X rays resulting from L-shell vacancies in uranium atoms, produced by bombarding thin targets with protons (2.0--18.0 MeV) and alphas (3.0--16.0 MeV) were measured using a Si(Li) x-ray detector. L-subshell ionization cross sections for uranium were extracted from the L..cap alpha../sub 1//sub ,//sub 2/, L..gamma../sub 1/, and L..gamma../sub 4//sub ,//sub 4//sub prime/ x-ray transitions. The observed projectile energy dependences are reasonably well reproduced by plane-wave Born, semiclassical, and binary-encounter approximation calculations at the higher energies, but show significant discrepancies below 2 MeV/amu. The ratios of sigma/sub L/1/sigma/sub L/2/ and sigma/sub L/3/sigma/sub L/2/ also show departures from theoretical predictions at low energies. (AIP)
