Polymorphism of ErF/sub 3/ and position of a third morphotropic transition in the lanthanide trifluoride series

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)
Phase transitions in HoF/sub 3/ and ErF/sub 3/ single crystals have been investigated using the method of thermal analysis. The oxygen content was checked at all stages of experiment, being not in excess of 0.004 wt percent. It is shown that with the indicated amount of oxygen impurity ErF/sub 3/ can be obtained in the form of large single crystals, in spite of the polymorphous transition 23/sup 0/C below the melting point. A study of the phase diagram of the HoF/sub 3/-ErF/sub 3/ system confirms the conclusion that the position of the morphotropic transition from orthorhombic over the whole temperature range LnF/sub 33/ (type beta-YF/sub 3/) to dimorphous ones (type alpha-YF/sub 3/ and beta-YF/sub 3/) occurs between HoF/sub 3/ and ErF/sub 3/.
