Formaldehyde mapping of Rho Ophiuchi B1 - The densest cold prestellar core

The structure of the cold core B1 of the Rho Oph molecular cloud is studied. The high (3-2) transitions of ortho- and para-H2CO were observed. A map of the core was obtained in the ortho-H2CO line, supplemented by para-H2CO observations along the ridge of the core. The para-to-ortho line ratio is used to infer a higher limit to the density of Rho Oph B1 than previous estimates. The structure inside B1 and its high density suggest that this may be a massive binary (or multiple) system in a very early stage of formation. 15 refs.
