Internal modulation of the polarization of an infrared laser

Polarization control of a He-Ne laser at lambda = 3.39 ..mu..m by means of varying the internal anisotropy of the cavity with the aid of an LiNbO/sub 3/ crystal has been investigated. It is shown experimentally that a voltage of 150 V is sufficient to achieve 100 percent modulation of the radiation intensity. This is 36 times less than this same voltage in the case of external modulation. It is shown theoretically that the change in the direction of the polarization plane of the radiation is only slightly dependent on the frequency up to frequencies of f = c/2S.
