The advantages and disadvantages of using solar concentrators in both photo-thermal and photovoltaic solar energy conversion systems are discussed. It is concluded that for thermal conversion the central-receiver Fresnel reflector system and the fixed mirror system should be closely examined. For photovoltaic systems, concentrators will enable significant reductions in the cost of solar cells and will still be economical for cell costs down to $0.50/peak watt.
