Testing of cruciform control rods for BWR/6

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7134157
This document presents the results of a thin cruciform control rod (CR) design, development, and test program to determine the minimum fuel channel gap required for reactor service. The experimental results are applicable to BWR/6 and have demonstrated that a reduction in fuel channel gaps from 0.750 to 0.482 inch (uniform gap) is achievable by utilizing a thin cruciform control rod (0.260 instead of 0.312 inches thick). A reference design (0.482-inch gap) test confirmed the adequacy of the thin control rod operating between four fuel channels spaced to simulate end-of-fuel-channel-life operating conditions (DELTAP deflection, etc.). The thin control rod has also been tested in 0.65-, 0.55-, 0.45-, and 0.40-inch fuel channel gaps with maximum dogleg misalignment.
