The feasibility of a 100% mixed-oxide (MOX)-fueled core utilizing weapons-grade plutonium in a 600-MW(electric) pressurized water reactor (PWR) called PDR600 has been studied as a part of the Plutonium Disposition Study under a U.S. Department of Energy contract. This paper presents the core design characteristics for one alternative of that study, whose basic objective is to transform, in 16 yr of operation, 100 tonnes of weapons-grade plutonium to a form similar to commercial spent-fuel discharge.
