Exploration geochemistry is the practical application of theoretical geochemical principles to mineral and hydrocarbon exploration. Its specific aim is to find new deposits of metals and nonmetals, or accumulations of crude oil and natural gas, and to locate extensions of existing deposits by employing chemical methods. The objective is to find some dispersion of elements or compounds sufficiently above normal to be called an anomaly, which may indicate mineralization or hydrocarbon accumulations. Following an introductory chapter reviewing the history, status, types of surveys, and successes of geochemical exploration, twelve chapters are entitled: The Primary Environment; The Secondary Environment; Some Basic Principles; Field Methods; Analytical Methods; Primary Dispersion; Secondary Dispersion; Regional and Detailed Surveys; Vegetation Surveys; Geochemical Exploration in Canada; The Statistical Treatment of Geochemical Data; and Application of Geochemistry to the Search for Crude Oil and Natural Gas.
