Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7128312

The 552-acre Iron Horse Park site is an active industrial complex and railyard with a long history of activities that have resulted in contamination of soil, ground water, and surface water in North Billerica, Massachusetts. The site includes open storage areas, landfills, and lagoons. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses the onsite 60-acre landfill, known as the Shaffer Landfill, that was used for disposal of residential and commercial solid waste from 1946 until its closure in 1986. The ROD addresses OU2, final remediation of the Shaffer Landfill, including leachate and ground water. A future ROD will address surface water contamination as part of OU3. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the landfill materials, ground water, and air are VOCs including benzene, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics including PAHs; and metals including arsenic and lead. The selected remedial action for the site is included.
