Combined process for low-sulfur liquid fuel from coal

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7127475
Pyritic sulfur is leached out with ferric sulfate, and organic sulfur is removed by hydrogenation; the troublesome filtration step in conventional liquefaction is eliminated. Unlike the older Meyers process, the new two-step process works not only with Appalachian coal but also with eastern interior coal basin and western U.S. coals. One test reduced the sulfur content of a western Kentucky coal to 0.85%; the liquid product met U.S. fuel sulfur standards for all new powerplants. Process has been developed by R.A. Meyers of TRW Systems Inc.
