The U.S.S.R. has developed a new method for automatically controlled electric-flash butt welding of ferritic steel pipelines with ultimate strengths up to 160,000 psi. A semistationary welder, a mobile welder, and a self-adjusting control system designed for use with the process allow application of the method to both small- and large-diameter cross-country pipelines as well as to gathering and distribution systems.
