Magnetic order, cluster phenomena, and hyperfine structure in amorphous YFe/sub 2/

Moessbauer spectra of /sup 57/Fe measured in bulk-sputtered YFe/sub 2/ (a-YFe/sub 2/) display temperature dependent behavior characteristic of long-range magnetic order for T less than T/sub c/ = 55 +- 5/sup 0/K. The spectral features are similar to those of other magnetically ordered amorphous rare-earth-Fe/sub 2/ (R-Fe/sub 2/) alloys. Spectral resolution is maintained up to T approximately equal 0.8 T/sub c/ with no evidence for superparamagnetic cluster phenomena. The average magnetic hyperfine field, anti H/sub eff/(T), closely follows an S = 1 Weiss molecular field dependence with anti H/sub eff/(5/sup 0/K) = 233 kOe. This field is unexpectedly large and comparable with that measured in the heavy R-Fe/sub 2/ alloys. It does not follow the general trend of decreasing anti H/sub eff/(0) with decreasing rare-earth moment. The ordering scheme below T/sub c/ is similar to that in other R-Fe/sub 2/ alloys.
