Development of an all-composite NGV high pressure storage cylinder. Final report, October 1989-July 1991

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7124598
The development of an all-composite cylinder for high pressure storage of natural gas on a vehicle was aimed at eliminating the major barrier to widespread use of natural gas as a vehicle fuel--the limited capacity, excessive weight and high cost of presently available cylinders. The research project demonstrated: (1) the feasibility of structurally containing high pressure (3,000 psi) natural gas through the composite overwrap alone without the use of a metallic liner, (2) a potential approach to the pole piece design and pole piece to liner interface, and (3) the unsuitability of a welded plastic laminate for a liner.
