The luminescence spectrum of the nitrous oxide molecule has been studied in the 2000--9000-A wavelength range at various energies of the exciting electrons. An intense uv band system belonging to the N/sub 2/O/sup +/ molecular ion (the A/sup 2/..sigma../sup +/ ..-->..X/sup 2/..pi../sub i/ electronic transition) was observed in the spectrum, as were emissions from decomposition products of the nitrous oxide. The energy dependence of the cross sections of the spectral bands of this system was investigated over a range of energies of the exciting electrons from the threshold to 300 eV. On the basis of the directly measured band cross sections, the cross section of the A/sup 2/..sigma../sup +/ electronic state was determined; it has the value 46.6 x 10/sup -18/ cm/sup 2/, which amounts to 12.3% of the total cross section for single ionization of the N/sub 2/O molecule.
