The processing of automotive ceramics is discussed. Particular attention is given to the temperature performance of ceramics and ceramic composites, ceramic component fabrication, the role of powder properties in ceramic processing, structural silicon carbide, and the preparation of silicon nitride powders. Papers are presented on transformation-toughened bulk tetragonal zirconia, the processing of transformation-toughened alumina, alumina-SiC whisker composites, and the effect of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ on properties of sintered Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/.
