Fluroescence line-narrowing studies of Nd: glass laser materials

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7122716
Significant progress was made toward the characterization of the properties of fluorescent ions in glassy media. From a detailed study of the Nd/sup 3 +/ ion in ED-2 glass, large variations in the emission were observed under line-narrowing conditions. Aside from changes in spectral structure, a site-to-site variation of the radiative and nonradiative decay rates and hence of the quantum efficiency was observed. The fluorescence of Nd/sup 3 +/ and Eu/sup 3 +/ was measured in fluoroberyllate glass as a function of wavelength.
