Preparation of ruthenium dioxide by reduction of Ru(VIII, VII, VI) with sodium tetrahydroborate in aqueous solution
The purpose of the present work was to develop a simple and convenient method for preparation of ruthenium dioxide of constant composition by reduction of Ru(VIII, VII, VI) with sodium tetrahydroborate in the cold in aqueous solutions at pH = 1-12. Under these conditions reduction of ruthenium compounds is virtually instantaneous and the dioxide is obtained in a form convenient for filtration and fairly pure. Hydrolysis of BH/sub 4//sup -/ is suppressed considerably in comparison with solutions of pH less than or equal to 1. The degree of hydrolysis in comparison with the main reaction decreases with increase of pH; this leads to increase of the RuO/sub 2/ yield and to decreased consumption of the reducing agent. In view of absence of literature data, the stoichiometry of the reaction of NaBH/sub 4/ with RuO/sub 4/ by methods of gas-volumetric and chemical analysis was investigated. The final product of Ru(VIII) reduction was also identified with the aid of IR spectroscopy and x-ray phase analysis.
