Title: Welding process development of high strength alloys. Final report 1 Dec 1970--1 Apr 1972. [HY 130, D6AC, and 9Ni--4Co--03C steels and titanium alloy 6Al--6V--2Sn]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7119147

The objective of this program was to establish the use of several advanced welding processes for joining a select group of high-strength alloys in thicknesses of 0.1 to 1.0 inch. Processes investigated were Electron Beam, Plasma, Pulsed GTA, and Hot Wire GTA. Steel alloys HY 130, D6AC, and 9Ni--4Co--0.3C were utilized for all processes. In addition, titanium alloy 6Al--6V--2Sn was included as part of the electron beam investigation. Each of the processes demonstrated the capability for achieving aerospace quality weldments in all materials. The processes were ranked according to their relative impact on production costs associated with total welding time, quality of weld, joint preparation, and distortion. Included in the report are descriptions of each process and the equipment utilized as well as detailed discussion of the development efforts. Evaluation of the weldments was performed non-destructively and destructively. NDT procedures included radiographic, ultrasonic, and magnetic particle methods. Mechanical testing included transverse and longitudinal tensiles and also determination of fracture toughness. A complete review of mechanical testing methods and test results are included, with emphasis on fracture toughness. (auth)
