HVDC link to test compact terminals
- Consolidated Edison Co., New York
A 100-MW dc link to demonstrate compact HVDC application for urban areas is being installed at Consolidated Edison's Astoria station. The purpose of the project is to accelerate development of compressed-gas technology for dc substations; to research, design, and produce equipment that will demonstrate the practicality of full-scale systems; and to provide a prototype test facility to obtain performance, reliability, and operating data for the electric utility industry. Major developments necessary for this project included a 400-kV dc SF/sub 6/-insulated bus system for connection between converter transformers, smoothing reactors, and thyristor valves, and also from the valves to the dc cables; a dead-tank, liquid-cooled, gas-insulated thyristor valve for 12-pulse operation; and 400-kV dc cables.
