Utility perspective on remote master of science nuclear engineering programs

With the termination of Northwestern University's nuclear program, both Sargent and Lundy Engineers (S and L) and Commonwealth Edison Company (CECo) were left without a nuclear engineering program in the northern Illinois area. As a result, through the efforts of N. Weber of S and L and B. Jones, head of the nuclear engineering department at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, S and L and CECo in conjunction with the extramural program of the University of Illinois inaugurated, in the spring of 1989, a program geared toward achievement of a master of science degree in nuclear engineering (MSNE). Essentially, the program consists of an after-hours course in which members of both companies meet at S and L's Chicago offices in a classroom setting to participate in the university's nuclear engineering courses via remote electronic media. After considering different electronic transfer concepts, videotaping of actual classroom courses was chosen as the preferred method.
