This paper describes SYNERGY, a software packaged designed to facilitate integrated analysis of different energy supply and demand side options at medium and large facilities. The software's highly flexible shell of automated LOTUS spreadsheets can be programmed to simulate the operation for a variety of energy systems based on hourly load data and equipment operating characteristics. Simulations can be performed using load data entered directly into a spreadsheet, or with load data which has been modified to reflect the impact of different demand-side options. Simulation results can then be imported into a financial spreadsheet in order to analyze scenarios involving different combinations of technologies, operating strategies, utility rate structures, and financing arrangements. An example is presented describing how the software has been programmed to simulate a combined-cycle cogeneration system with an extraction steam turbine, to compare the economics of a potential cogeneration project in combination with numerous other energy management options being considered at the University of Pennsylvania.
