Photoionization mass spectrometry of trans-azomethane

Journal Article · · Int. J. Mass Spectrom. Ion Phys.; (United States)

Photoionization efficiency curves for ions derived from trans-azomethane have been recorded from 8.0 to 13.0 eV. The ionization potential of the molecule is determined to be 8.45 +- 0.05 eV. Fragmentation thresholds are determined for processes producing CH/sub 3/N/sub 2//sup +/ (9.20 +- 0.03 eV) and CH/sub 3//sup +/ (11.32 +- 0.05 eV). Refined measurements of the gas-phase basicity (proton affinity) of trans-azo-methane are reported. These data are analyzed in conjunction with the adiabatic ionization potential of the molecule to demonstrate some chemical consequences of the nitrogen lone-pair interaction in azomethane.
