In horizontal-well-test analysis, reservoirs must be visualized as 3D formations. Hence, lateral-boundary effects are important factors in the understanding of the complexity of horizontal-well transient-pressure behavior. However, the literature provides little investigation of lateral-boundary effects. The authors objective is to provide a spectrum of possible transient-pressure derivative responses for horizontal wells in homogeneous reservoirs under various lateral-boundary geometries, which include laterally infinite, single boundary, intersecting no-flow boundaries, and parallel boundaries, with mixed-formation top and bottom (either no flow or aquifer/gas-cap). Analytic solutions are derived with Green's functions (in real time) or image super-position. Derivative type-curve analysis is described. In addition, they offer a synthesis of the entire interpretation theory and such features of various flow regimes as their derivative shapes, beginning and end times, and parameter estimation. The effects of the distance between the well and the boundary and the wellbore producing length are discussed. The difficulties in computing analytic solutions for horizontal wells in closed reservoirs have been reported extensively in the literature. Thus, the authors do no include any aspects of the computation of closed-system, horizontal-wellbore-pressure responses.
