The evolution of high energy accelerators

The history of high energy accelerators is chronicled. The physical principles of the cyclotron are described, as are those of betatrons, synchrocyclotrons, synchrotrons, colliding beam accelerators, and heavy ion accelerators, comments about the physics learned from these machines are given.(AIP)
