The reaction of the metal carbonyl hydrides ([eta][sup 5]-C[sub 5]H[sub 4]CH[sub 3])[sub 2]M(CO)H M = Nb (1), Ta (2) with dioxygen produces the metal formato complexes ([eta][sup 5]-C[sub 5]H[sub 4]CH[sub 3])[sub 2]-Nb(O)([eta][sup 1]-O[sub 2]CH) (3) and ([eta][sup 5]-C[sub 5]H[sub 4]CH[sub 3])[sub 2]Ta(O)([eta][sup 1]-O[sub 2]CH) (4), apparently through the intermediacy of the corresponding CO[sub 2] complexes ([eta][sup 5]-C[sub 5]H[sub 4]CH[sub 3])[sub 2]M([eta][sup 2]-CO[sub 2])H. 23 refs.
