Superflywheel energy storage and nonsynchronous ac/dc/ac electric transmission supplements power system operation

The high-capacity kinetic energy storage afforded by present superflywheels can be combined with an ac/dc/ac power-electronic converter system to provide unique stable economic energy transfer as needed from the variable-speed storage unit to the fixed-frequency utility grid.
