(C{sub 16}H{sub 36}N){sub 3}Bi{sub 3}I{sub 12}, M{sub r}=2877{center dot}20, monoclinic, P2{sub 1}/c, a=17{center dot}796 (4), b=20{center dot}565 (6), c=23{center dot}414 (8){angstrom}, {beta} = 100{center dot}25 (2), V=8432 (4) {angstrom}{sup 3}, Z =4, D{sub x} = 2{center dot}266 Mg m{sup {minus}3}, {lambda}(Mo K{alpha}) = 0{center dot}71069 {angstrom}, {mu} = 10{center dot}61 mm{sup {minus}1}, F(000) = 5208, room temperature, final R = 0{center dot}140 for 4850 independent observed reflections with F{sub o}{gt}3{sigma}(F{sub o}). The compound contains a novel Bi{sub 3}I{sub 12}{sup 3{minus}} anion, consisting of three face-sharing (BiI{sub 6}) octahedra. The bridging Bi-I bond lengths average 3{center dot}078{angstrom} (inner Bi atom) and 3{center dot}330 {angstrom} (outer Bi atoms), whereas the bonds to terminal I atoms averaged 2{center dot}910 {angstrom}. Bond length constraints were applied to the refinement of the tetrabutylammonium cation C atoms.
