Site-specific risk assessments are accepted, or at least considered, by many states as an alternative approach to applying generic cleanup standards. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) LUST program is considering using site-specific health risk assessments to determine if a particular LUST site poses a health concern that warrants remediation. Health risk assessments are not just applicable for LUST sites, but are appropriate for nearly any small or large, chemically contaminated site facing potential remedial action. Even when remediation appears eminent, a risk assessment can help raise cleanup standards to a level that's easier, and less costly, to attain. In fact, when applied to larger contaminated sites, such as Superfund sites, the savings achieved through health risk assessments can be significant.
