Lake and reservoir restoration

Book ·
OSTI ID:7109049

Eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs has become one of the most obvious and pervasive water quality problems in the world today. Protection of clean water systems and restoration of eutrophic water bodies is badly needed. This new book addresses this need, and deals specifically with lake and reservoir restoration techniques. This book details methods of managing and restoring eutrophic and acidified lakes and reservoirs. The procedures or manipulations presented are meant to be used after diversion, in conjunction with diversion, or to temporarily improve the lake without actual restoration. The authors examine each major restoration procedure to lower nutrient concentration or to control plant biomass with regard to its scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. The reader can determine, for example, how to calculate the volume of air flow required to destratify a lake, how to consider the many factors related to the implementation of a dredging project, or find a list of macrophytes susceptible to water level drawdown. The lake and reservoir restoration procedures are divided into two groups in the book. The first, Physical-Chemical Control of Nutrients, includes diversion and advanced waste treatment, dilution/flushing, hypolimnetic withdrawal, phosphorous precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. The second group, Control of Plant Biomass, includes artificial circulation, water level drawdown, harvesting, biological controls, and surface and sediment covers.
