The City Chemical Company, Aka City Industries, Inc., operated from 1971 to August 1983 and was involved in the receipt, handing, storage, reclamation, and disposal of a wide variety of waste chemicals. Contaminants of concern in surface water are 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethene, tetrachloroethene, toluene, xylenes, and Freon. Contaminants in groundwater are: methylene chloride, chloroform, dichlorobromomethane, 1,1-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethene, trans-1,2-dichloroethene, trichloroethene, tetrachloroethene, benzene, chlorobenzene, ethyl benzene, n-propylbenzene, m-buylbenzene, toluene, xylenes, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, carbon disulfide, acetone, caprolactan, chromium, lead, manganese, barium, iron, aluminum, and benzo(a)pyrene. The site is considered to be of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health caused by the possibility of exposure to hazardous substances via groundwater.
