Title: New console and control system for the 5. 5 inch air gun

Abstract

The 5.5 inch air gun, located in Bldg. 882, was originally operated with manual valves, pressure gages and high pressure plumbing, all located in close proximity to the operator. This system was replaced with electrically operated valves and controls. All high pressure plumbing was removed from the vicinity of the operator. Many safety interlocks were incorporated into this new design.

    Seven sets of hardware associated with either the operator's consoles or the host computers for the Safeguards Control and Communications System (SCCS) are described in this manual. The hardware complements include (1) the Tektronix 4125 graphics terminal and color cathode-ray tubes, (2) the switch group interface (SGI), (3) the audio-alarm horn, (4) the touch-sensitive panels, (5) the communications dataplexer, (6) the WWVB Clock, and (7) the RS-232 to RS-422 converter. This manual details all technical information necessary to maintain each of these components in this system.   • A mechanical shock actuator has been converted into an air gun capable of firing 8-inch-diameter (20.32 cm) projectiles to velocities exceeding 1000 fps (304.8 m/s). This new capability has been used to study the effect of impact velocity upon the energy absorbed by crushable materials. Shock-pulse data is reduced by computer techniques and test results are displayed in either tabular or graphic format by use of the CDC 6600 Calcomp plotter. (auth)

  • The Integrated Air Pollution Control System (IAPCS) Cost Model was developed to estimate costs and performance for emission control systems applied to coal-fired utility boilers. The model can project a material balance, an equipment list, and capital investment and revenue requirements based on user-specified input data. The model includes conventional and emerging technologies for controlling nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter emissions. A variety of technology modules built into the model can be incorporated and combined. Cost and performance estimates can be analyzed in terms of integrated technologies. Conventional and emerging technologies included are low NOX combustion (overfiremore » air/low NOX burners), natural gas reburning, advanced gas reburning, selective catalytic reduction, selective noncatalytic reduction, limestone injection multistage burners, the advanced silicate process, wet limestone flue gas desulfurization, dry sorbent injection, physical coal cleaning, coal switching, lime spray drying, spray humidification, electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, atmospheric fluidized bed combustion, pressurized fluidized bed combustion, the integrated gasfication combined cycle process, and pulverized coal burning boilers. The following revisions have been made to version 5.a: - Addition of Gas Substitution (GS) to the Natural Gas Reburning (NGR) and Advanced Gas Reburning (AGR) Module. Gas Substitution (GS) was added to allow the user to estimate the cost of substituting natural gas for coal in a utility boiler. - Flue Gas Flow Rate Revision. The user can now choose to use coal analyses to compute the mass and volumetric flue gas flow rate. Previously, an F-Factor was used, which calculated flue gas flow rate as a function of heat input to the boiler (dscf/MMBtu). ADVACATE Revision. The maximum size of a tower mill is 60 MW. The previous ADVACATE cost equations were based on a tower mill size of 100 MW.« less

  • This segment describes: oil well production facilities, equipment, and processes; gathering line systems and crude oil truck transport; crude oil pipeline systems and inspection of non-transportation-related components; oil storage at terminals and tank farms; and inspection and SPCC requirements at these sites.

  • When expending Superfund monies at a CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act) site, EPA must conduct a search to identify parties with potential financial responsibility for remediation of uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. EPA regional Superfund Waste Management Staff issue a notice letter to the potentially responsible party (PRP). Data from the notice letter is used to form the Site Enforcement Tracking System (SETS). The data includes PRP name and address, a company contact person, the date the notice was issued, and the related CERCLA site name and identification number. SETS was created by EPA to track PRP identificationmore » at both NPL (National Priority List) and non-NPL sites. SETS does not address the range of other administrative duties related to tracking the PRP. These lists (updated quarterly) represent EPA's preliminary findings on the identities of PRPs. Inclusion on these lists does not constitute a final determination concerning the liability of any party for the hazard or contamination at any CERCLA site. Region 5 includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.« less
