Manganese-54 and /sup 56/Mn were determined in water at concentrations less than 10/sup -7/ Ci/1 by precipitating the radioactive Mn with a carrier as MnO/sub 2/, reprecipitation as manganese ammonium phosphate for calculation of chemical yield, and counting the final precipitate with a gamma counter for /sup 54/Mn or /sup 56/Mn or with a beta particle detector for /sup 56/Mn only. Large amounts of Cl/sup -/ in the original sample make precipitation difficult, and stable managanese effects the calculations of the chemical yield. For a random counting error of less than 1%, the precision of the method with a single operator is better than 2%.
