Ultrasonic techniques are being investigated for real-time fusion zone sensing of arc welding processes for closed-loop process control. Previous laboratory studies which demonstrated the feasibility of ultrasonic sensing of molten pool geometry are being extended to the consideration of instrumentation for use on realistic welding configurations. Experiments performed to monitor weld fusion zones in steel plates with an ultrasonic search wheel device are described.
