BP closes down Baglan Bay unit

BP Chemicals (London) says the decision to close its 50,000-m.t./year butadiene unit at Baglan Bay, U.K. will improve the overall viability of the site, allowing [BP] to concentrate on its core products. Despite CEO Bryan Sanderson's concession that the Baglan Bay site is its most marginal cracker location, the company refutes speculation that the butadiene closure is a precursor to the complete shutdown of the cracker. However, it is perhaps significant that BP has decided to close the butadiene plant and cocrack its crude C[sub 4] production rather than invest in a C[sub 4] hydrogenation unit at Baglan Bay. This latter option has been the choice of several other European producers as a means of eradicating surplus butadiene. For example, Exxon Chemical International (Brussels) is about to close its 40,000-m.t./year butadiene unit at Fawley, U.K. to coincide with startup of a C[sub 4] hydrogenation plant there.
